Itinerary: This video covers the second day of a five day backpacking trip to the Puyehue volcano area from the Licán / Anticura trailhead on Chile ruta 215 which included the hike to refugio El Caulle, the ascent to the Puyehue volcano summit and crater rim hike, the out and back hike through the Cordon Caulle area and the return to the trailhead on the final day. Day 2: Ascent to the Puyehue volcano summit, crater rim hike - out and back from the refugio El Caulle. Trip Section Stats: Approx. 8.2 mi, approx. 3000 ft elevation gain. Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stop recording only once camp was setup for each day. Hiking Notes: The hike to the summit of the Puyehue volcano is one not to be missed if visiting the Los Ríos region in Chile. Along with the hike across Cordon Caulle in the following days of the same backpacking trip this was indeed one I had great anticipations for this trip to Chile. I was certainly not disappointed. Both the ascent and the rim hike offered amazing views of a beautiful, wild and varied volcanic landscape. Overall the hike was not difficult, the Puyehue crater and rim are certainly impressive. The 360 views from the top are also superb pretty much in every direction, including a very clear and beautiful view of the Cordon Caulle area with large lava fields. So, overall a five star hike, no doubts. This hike can certainly be done as a long out-and-back day hike directly from the trailhead, but that would leave little time at the top to appreciate both the crater and the surrounding views. In my opinion, providing time is not a constraint, it makes far more sense to hike to the refugio El Caulle the day before, spend the night there (which can also be a treat on its own, particularly during morning and evening hours), then ascent to the summit from there and enjoy the time and great views from up there as long as possible.
