In this video, I listen to “How Do You Sleep” by The Stone Roses, and this was my first time hearing the song. Musically, the track immediately struck me as very ’80s-sounding, almost like college or alternative rock from the United States in the 1980s. The production, chord choices, and overall vibe feel rooted in that era, which I actually enjoyed. From a purely musical standpoint, it has a familiar, nostalgic sound that fits comfortably alongside a lot of American alternative music from that time. Where I struggled a bit was with the lyrics. They felt dark and confusing, and honestly, I didn’t really understand what the song was trying to say. That’s not unusual for me, though — I’ve never been someone who instantly “gets” lyrics, especially when they’re abstract or open to interpretation. In this case, the mood came through more clearly than the message. As a classic rock drummer, I tend to focus more on feel, arrangement, and overall atmosphere than lyrical meaning, and that’s where this song lived for me. Even without fully understanding the words, the song still creates a distinct mood and sense of time and place. This was one of those listens where the sound and era stood out more than the story, and while it didn’t completely click for me lyrically, it was still interesting to hear this side of The Stone Roses.
