As WW2 dragged on austerity measures were becoming ever more severe. Magazines and newspapers became smaller, not just in size and number of pages. Less printing room meant the type was made as small as possible to fit everything in and the paper thinner and thinner. Wartime austerity can also be seen in the types of patterns that were published in women's magazines. Jumpers feature shorter sleeves, more fitted shaping and the use of two or more coloured yarns to accommodate the rationing of yarn and allow knitters to make best use of the serviceable yarn from outgrown or worn out garments they had unravelled. This issue also features a pair of slippers with crocheted soles and felt uppers. Not unlike some of the house shoes and slides we still wear today. Here in the Vintage household we've tested out the jam fritters from page 13 and they've been given the Mr Vintage stamp of approval. Thanks for watching.
