(I played without my headphones this run, so was definitely less aware than I should have been) So out of all the level 30 talents on Outcast Engineer, I love Gromril-Plated Shot the most; if only for the fact that it can be used against everything in the game. Horde clearing isn't as fun, sure, but landing shots with this thing is so satisfying. Your shots carry more stagger by default due to the increased power, and you really feel the weight of them as you stop most elites right in their tracks. It makes Gromril-Plated Shot one of the most reliable answers to ambient enemies in the entire game in my opinion. That said though, the versatility comes at the cost of its efficiency; it's ridiculously slow— so slow that it ruins your boss damage and it’s difficult to use on a whim, but it’s better than Innovative Ammo Hoppers at least for the reward it gives. You basically need to run Head Full of Steam to bypass this major weakness and get any use out of Gromril-Plated Shot in a true solo. Otherwise, it is super seldom to see it in play since it can’t always cover you if you’re surrounded. Which means, Head Full of Steam it is, along with all the maintenance that comes with that talent. As much as I'd love to take the Cog Hammer or Dual Hammers, a shield weapon of sorts seems like a natural partner to this build solely because of Head Full of Steam. Having the extra safety is incredibly important, trust me. I took Combined Arms for that same reason to meet a breakpoint against Plague Monks, but might try meeting that breakpoint in different ways so I can take Ablative Armor/Piston Power instead. While I think you could run Bombardier or Ingenious Ordinance and get good use out of either, Armor Piercing Slugs makes the most sense to take for this build imo. While you can shoot through additional unarmored enemies by default with your Gromril shots since they have more power, you can’t pierce through most elites without it. Armor Piercing Slugs gives you the ability to safely fire into an approaching horde that has elites mixed into it— which is not only fun, it increases your incentive to use your minigun as a main source of damage. I just think it works really well. The extra piercing is also lowkey great for your Masterwork Pistol; Armor Piercing Slugs is a huge buff for this weapon and has fantastic synergy with Conservative Shooter or whatever else you want to use with it. It makes it really nice for kiting bosses and still hitting things behind it still. For some reason, patrols were disabled this run (not that I would mess with them normally), but I never ran into a boss either (which is incredibly fortunate). With how much you are able to preserve your Masterwork Pistol shots, though, I don't think a boss would have been much of an issue to deal with.
