Transcribed from the stereo master. Track 3 of 4 from the 'Without A Lion' EP. Buy/Stream 'Without A Lion' EP: https://slinky.to/WithoutALion Read the liner notes: http://www.mediafire.com/file/x59p7jp... ____________________________________________________ Composition Notes: I experiment with impressionistic harmony in this piece. Leaving the pedal down for the entire introductory section creates a wash of colours. I largely adhere to the pentatonic scale. This is also a venture into ‘tonal clusters’, embracing the subtle dissonance of second intervals for colourful expression. 0:00 – The first birdcalls of a new day. By holding the pedal down for the entire introduction, the piano produces a wash of colours. 1:53 – Paradisial songbirds of Heaven. Luminous tone clusters. 2:35 – A reminder of nature’s volatility. I see a flock of birds taking off, having sensed danger. A storm is coming. ____________________________________________________ About The EP This EP has been recorded entirely on felt piano at Richard J. Birkin's home studio. The muffled, sotto voce tone evokes an intense intimacy with the piano like I have never felt before. There is an honesty – an earthiness to these recordings – every pedal change and finger press has been audibly captured. At times during the recording sessions, I asked myself: “what does the soul of a piano look like?” Perhaps I knew already, as I looked upon the motion of hammers, strings and felt. ____________________________________________________ Artwork: Alex Kozobolis – “An Old Man, In A City, Without A Lion” The man in this picture represents the lion-keeper. He is sat on a bench with no one opposite, in an unfamiliar city environment. The familiar texture of rough fur is no more. Although he is not old, he feels lost now— without a lion to care for; a purpose. He tries to remember the life he gave Marjan, that it was bound to happen. Marjan is resting beside Chucha somewhere, beneath some tall tree, in Paradise, young and unwounded. Ⓟ © 2020 Bucks Music Group
