Moving Score video for 'The Ruins (Felt Mix)'. This could be a note-perfect transcription of the master recording! Track 2 of 4 from the 'Without A Lion' EP. That includes the destruction in Yemen, or the millions displaced by civil war in Syria. In this piece, I put myself in the eyes and mind of someone who has lost their house and possessions— potentially family too— to war. I see hope even in the situation ‘The Ruins’ describes. Human determination is a remarkable force that few situations can erode completely. People always find a way to make the most of their lot. We ran the final section of the piece through an old tape machine. This creates a warbling effect, as if the music is struggling to speak for itself. Something good has happened, out of all that came before. I keep in mind all those entangled in wars they have nothing to do with, whenever I play this piece. ____________________________________________________ About The EP This EP has been recorded entirely on felt piano at Richard J. Birkin's home studio. The muffled, sotto voce tone evokes an intense intimacy with the piano like I have never felt before. There is an honesty – an earthiness to these recordings – every pedal change and finger press has been audibly captured. At times during the recording sessions, I asked myself: “what does the soul of a piano look like?” Perhaps I knew already, as I looked upon the motion of hammers, strings and felt. Artwork: Alex Kozobolis – “An Old Man, In A City, Without A Lion” The man in this picture represents the lion-keeper. He is sat on a bench with no one opposite, in an unfamiliar city environment. The familiar texture of rough fur is no more. Although he is not old, he feels lost now— without a lion to care for; a purpose. He tries to remember the life he gave Marjan, that it was bound to happen. Marjan is resting beside Chucha somewhere, beneath some tall tree, in Paradise, young and unwounded.
