The train ride between Niš and Zaječar is located in the Carpathian-Balkan arc of Eastern Serbia that represents a special landscape entity. This railway line in its largest part follows the valley of the Svrljiški Timok river. Between cities Svrljig and Knjaževac it passes through the canyon and gorge that the Svrljiški Timok river creates in one part of its flow, retreating between afar slopes of the Stara Planina and the Tresibaba mountains. Starting from Niš, the first 5 km of the journey is along the main Belgrade - Niš railway line. After leaving the predominantly freight trains Crveni Krst station it begins a hilly - mountainous winding single-track, non-electrified line. The long ascent continues to the pass at an elevation of about 450 meters above sea level, located in the longest tunnel on this route, the Gramada tunnel (L = 1701 m). On this section, the railway line curves sharply, overcoming the ascent on the hillsides above the city of Niš. After the Gramada tunnel, a continuous descent towards the north begins. The line gradually enters the valley of the Svrljiški Timok river. After the village of Niševac arise the Niševac Gorge and the Niševac Canyon. Particularly scenically prominent places are around the villages Palilula and Podvis. The track runs through a continuous series of more than 30 tunnels and crosses over 30 bridges, overcoming the obstacles of the winding river canyon. The tunnels are mostly naturally carved into the rocks, without subsequent concreting. The railway tunnel edges follow the appearance of natural rocks, which makes these sections especially beautiful to look at. Further from the town of Knjaževac, the ride is mostly flat, through the valleys of the Svrljiški and Beli Timok rivers. This line has been largely overhauled and track is covered with fresh white ballast on some parts. Although it looks like train could travel much faster, that's not the case. The repaired sections of the railway line have not been officially handed over from the contractors to the Serbian Railways. These are standard and very common problems of Serbian and other Balkan railways as well. Trains must run slowly for days and months until all legal issues are resolved. More details are written in the footnotes during the video. Along the way, train pass many signals indicating that further driving is prohibited. In most cases, this is a common situation because the railway stations along the way have long been closed and abandoned. Unfortunately, carelessness, neglect, non-maintenance of railway infrastructure and abandonment of tracks and stations are increasingly present on railways in this region. An additional interesting fact is that the scenes from the movie "Dvoboj za Južnu prugu" ("Battle for the Southern Railway") were filmed in the canyon rocky part of this railway. Certain scenes from the movie "Duel for the Southern Railway" were filmed on the sections of this railway line in Svrljiška Klisura gorge, near Niševac, as well as in the villages Palilula and Podvis. In October 1941, Partisans from southern Serbia and Macedonia received a direct message from the Main Headquarters of the Partisan units of Yugoslavia: "Watch out for communications, especially the main railway line Niš - Skopje - Thessaloniki, as well as the railway line Niš - Pirot - Sofia. These railways must be disabled all the time at any cost - Tito." This old historical film was declared the best Partisan film by many film critics. This ride is made by a local passenger train, DMU ŽS series 711. The ride ends at the Zaječar railway station, one of the largest and most important on the railways of Eastern Serbia. Upon arrival at the platform, it continued a little longer until the train was shunted to the train depot Zaječar. Important details, current location, maximum, limited and slow order speeds, elevation and additional information are displayed at the bottom and in the lower left corner of the video.
