Well Mr Egg Whites make you fat (yes he actually claimed this) @thebenazadi is back with more interesting claims about LDL cholesterol. I find it funny that Ben claims people need to unlearn & relearn things when I have not seen him change his mind on one single thing he’s been saying the last decade. I can tell you that I have personally changed my mind on LDL Cholesterol. I used to believe it was all about the HDL to LDL ratio, but enough research has come out showing that LDL is a CAUSITIVE factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD) that I changed my mind. The biggest lever is the mendelian randomization studies that use natural genetic variation that are randomly distributed to asses various questions in biology. Think of MR studies as life long randomized controlled trials. These genetic variations cause people to secrete less or more LDL over the course of their lifetime & wouldn’t you know it? In these studies of MILLIONS of subjects, you can draw a STRAIGHT LINE through their lifetime exposure to LDL & their risk of CVD (PMID: 23083789). Not only that but we have the mechanistic data demonstrating that LDL cholesterol can penetrate the endothelium (and regular ol’ LDL cholesterol, not just small or oxidized LDL) (PMIDs: 70686 & 40013359). Once LDL crosses into the intima, its lipoprotein, ApoB then can be enzymatically modified, causing the LDL molecular to be retained inside the arterial wall, this retention then recruits inflammation & macrophages to the site, causing the formation of foam cells which leads eventually to narrowing of the arteries (PMID: 35310965). Further, this effect is INDEPENDENT OF INFLAMMATION (PMID: 29146277). That is, LDL is atherogenic even in environments with low inflammation & LDL’s penetration, subsequent modification, & retention in the intima is what RECRUITS inflammation to the site. LDL CAUSES inflammation to be recruited! Ben provides no real evidence to support his claims. He relies on conspiracy talk (tEh GoVeRnMeNt & BiG pHaRmA DiD iT!) & inaccurate analogies to support his claims.
