Namibia is today marking the first anniversary of the death of Founding President Sam Nujoma, with tributes recognising his contributions not only as a visionary leader but also as the Father of the Nation. Dr. Sam Nujoma, Namibia's first president, guided the country through its most defining chapter, from colonial rule, through exile and armed struggle, to independence. For decades, he stood at the forefront of the liberation movement, shaping the vision of a free Namibia long before that freedom became reality. From exile, he mobilised international support, united a divided people, and kept alive the dream of a sovereign nation. When Namibia gained independence in 1990, Nujoma became the face of a new beginning. As Father of the Nation, he represented more than political authority. Former Vice President of Zambia, Nevers Mumba, said, "They wanted to be rich, and that's not what Nujoma and his colleagues did; they pushed for us to get educated, they pushed for us for free education, and they pushed us to succeed like a father in a home that would give his last penny to his son to be able to look after himself at his own expense. I pray that God gives us leaders like that to move forward." He symbolised protection, direction and resolve as Namibia learnt to govern itself. His influence helped shape national values of unity, dignity and service. His sense of guidance continues to be felt across generations, says eldest son Utoni Nujoma. "We have had and found solace in the inspiration to carry his torch forward, ensuring that the light he brought into our lives continued to shine brightly forever in our collective memories. As we continue to celebrate his greatness, kindness, humility, and above all, the extraordinary legacy he left behind, his physical absence from our family continues to be the most difficult part. But with the support of the Namibian nation, we have been able to move on from this painful past."
