In a remote jungle camp in central Indonesian Borneo, Birute Galdikas-Brindamour studies the elusive orangutan, the only living Asian great ape. Birute believes that orangs developed their solitary, unsociable lifestyle because their favourite foods are scattered and sparse in the jungle, and group feeding would be impossible. Six thousand miles away, on a 10,000 foot volcanic peak of the Virunga Mountains in Africa, Dian Fossey is studying at close range the mountain gorilla, largest of the great apes. She has identified 17 gorilla vocalizations ranging from echoing "hoot barks" of curiosity or alarm to the rumbling, belch-like noises they make while feeding. Search for the Great Apes, offers you the chance to join these dedicated scientists for a close-up view of these most intriguing creatures. Produced by Christine Z.
