Jesus came to fulfill everything which had been written about him in the Law and Prophets and "these commands" which he is now giving to his disciples are teaching them how to have a righteousness which surpasses the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees (You have heard it said.... But I say to you....). Jesus is teaching them a new and living way: how to walk in the righteousness of God rather than by the righteousness of the Law through works of the Law just as Paul preached in his letters. Same thing. The Law of Christ is walking in the way of the Love of God and against His Love their is NO Law. THESE COMMANDS (v.19) = "But I say to you...." (v.21ff.) THESE COMMANDS (v.19) = How to have a surpassing righteousness (v.20) "You have heard it said..... BUT I SAY TO YOU....." 5:21, 27, 31, 33, 38, 43 Rather than teaching his disciples to "keep the commands of the Law," Jesus is teaching them how to have the righteousness of God which far surpasses keeping commandments of the Law. The Law of Christ is walking in the way of the Love of God and against His Love their is NO Law. Jesus: "You have heard it said...." "Unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.: Paul: No flesh will be justified in His sight through works of the Law (Rom 3:20) Jesus: "These commands....But I say to you..." Be perfect/complete even as your heavenly Father is perfect/complete Paul: "A righteousness of God apart from the Law" (Romans 3:21) Exact same thing. This "righteousness of God" is something we must DO. 1 John 3:7; Eph 2:10. Also: BE quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger for the anger of man does not WORK OUT THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD... be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves...a man justified by works and not by faith alone. James Jesus, James, John, and Paul, are all say the exact same thing. Do not be deceived. Whatever a man sows THIS he will reap. Galatians 6:7-7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does what is righteous is righteous JUST AS he is righteous. 1 John 3:7 (see Matthew 5:43-48) Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. James 1:22 Without holiness NO ONE will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the FORMER lusts which were yours in your ignorance but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all YOUR conduct 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” If YOU address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves IN FEAR.... 23 for YOU have been born again... 1 Peter 1:14-23
