This animation depicts the steps involved in percutaneous lumbar laser discectomy of the spine. It begins with a antero-lateral view of the lumbar spine. The vertebral discs are shown, with the damaged L5-S1 disc causing pain. The defect is shown in sagittal view. The view changes to an axial view of the L5-S1 disc and surrounding structures. The stages of annular tear are depicted. The process of how outer annular tear causes inflammation, herniation and pain is depicted. The view shifts to a view of a patient with his lumbar region exposed, which is then shown being prepped. A needle is inserted into the L5-S1 disc. Back to the axial view, the annular disc material is destroyed by a laser, causing the inflamed areas to shrink. The intradiscal nerves shrivel causing the elimination of pain impulses.
