Let's make an herbal salve! Have you ever wanted to learn to make your own medicine? You have found a learning space where educational videos for kids are abound. This video provides a quick overview of how to make an herbal salve. Let's get started! For Adults: Viewing the process of making medicine is truly a gift for children to witness. The smells, and textures of an herbal salve are sensory stimulating and healthy to experience. It also teaches them about herbs, the power of plants and I will say there is a lovely gift of "I can, I will, I am Strong." Self sufficiency is a wonderful feeling! This video is made for children to watch and learn. Parents, teachers or caregivers can provide the herbal salve to smell and try. If you want to use this idea with your child as a lovely afternoon or morning home based parent child activity please see the recipe and details below. Welcome! I am Mrs. Heather and I am the founder of a small preschool program in New York. I love to teach little ones all about what we used to do in our daily lives long ago, going back to a simple way of living in parts of our day. There are so many joys that children and adults can find in making things by hand, spending time in nature, learning about history and engaging in lessons from long ago. Some of the steps require fire or a stove so be safe with these steps. What to purchase or collect for this activity: I provided links in case you do not have these at home. These are all from Amazon and are a good idea of what cost and materials would look like. You do not need to purchase this exact product. There are many choices but these are what I have found useful. Some of them are even suggestions from other you tubers that I purchased and found helpful. Having the right tool is everything! For salve making supplies: http://mountainroseherbs.com Recipe: Two steps 4-6 weeks apart One Day: Step 1: Pour 2-3 cups of Calendula flowers (dried) into 12oz of Your Oil. This part is great fun for children. Then put a lid on the oil or cover with a towel. Put the soaking calendula in oil mixture in a dark place or on a shelf away from the window. Children can stir this one time a week or more for four-six weeks. Then you will have your child help you strain the oil and remove the flower. The flower can be composted or you can let your child play with it as a sensory experience first. When they are done be careful as their hands will be very oily. It is wonderful for the skin but not for your walls! They can make mud pies with the flowers as well. Another Day Step 2: Take your lovely newly made oil and mix the ingredients below together in your pot. Skin Food Salve Recipe by Heather Stewart 3/4 cup calendula in Grapeseed Oil (Calendula plus carrier oil) see below to make this cold infused oil 1/4 cup coconut oil (when you buy this it is hard) 1 oz bees wax (.5 lbs if shaving and weighing) shaving melts easier (less time in heat is good for the end result in my opinion) 12-14 drops of essential oil (6 spearmint and 6 tea tree oil) Combine this all in a pot and stir on medium heat till it is all melted. Children can help with this part or can play and come check on the potion to view the process of melting. Pouring the hot mixture into the jars or tins is best for adults to do. Children can come and view the drying process and enjoy the smells. Older children can help with the pour. It really just depends on your child and what they are ready to help with. Just be careful as it is very hot when you first pour. A measuring cup with a pour spout that is not very heavy is helpful if children are pouring the mixture. Let dry and label. Enjoy!
