Norfolk Island was the most feared destination in the entire British convict system. Located more than a thousand miles from the Australian mainland, the island became a secondary penal colony where the most rebellious and dangerous prisoners were sent after committing further crimes in Australia. Convicts spoke of the settlement with dread. Some prisoners reportedly begged to be executed rather than be sent there. In this documentary we explore the violent history of Norfolk Island, including the killing of Patrick Clynch, the shocking testimony of John Macdonald, and the brutal discipline imposed by commandants such as James Thomas Morisset, Alexander Maconochie, and Major Joseph Childs. The story culminates in the Cooking Pot Uprising of 1846, when prisoners led by the bushranger William Westwood, known as Jackey-Jackey, launched a violent rebellion that ended with thirteen executions. Norfolk Island was meant to enforce order through fear. Instead, it became one of the most brutal and controversial experiments in the history of the British penal system.
