(30 May 2011) SHOTLIST 1. Wide of US president Barack Obama entering Rose Garden for news conference 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of the United States: "The men and women of our armed forces are the best our nation has to offer and they deserve nothing but the absolute best in return, and that includes leaders who will guide them and support their families with wisdom and strength and compassion." 3. Cutaway of media 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of the United States: "With nearly 40 years in uniform, Martin Dempsey is one of our nation's most respected and combat-tested generals. In Iraq he led our soldiers against a brutal insurgency. Having trained Iraqi forces, he knows that nations must ultimately take responsibility for their own security. Having served as acting commander of central command, he understands that in Iraq and Afghanistan security gains and political progress must go hand in hand. And just as he challenged the army to embrace new doctrine and tactics, I expect him to push all our forces to continue adapting and innovating to be ready for the missions of today and tomorrow." 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of the United States: "As vice-chairman, Admiral "Sandy" Winnefeld will draw on more than 30 years of distinguished service. Under his command fighters from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise pounded Taliban positions in the weeks after 9-11, and his carrier strike group played a critical role in air operations over Iraq." 6. Cutaway of Army General Martin Dempsey (left) and Navy Admiral James "Sandy" Winnefeld listening 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of the United States: "For the next Army Chief of Staff, I'm nominating one of the Army's most accomplished soldiers and one of the tallest, General Ray Odierno (zoom into Odierno). In three pivotal deployments to Iraq, he commanded the troops that captured Saddam Hussein, partnered with General Petraeus to help bring down the violence, and then transferred responsibility to Iraqi forces, allowing us to remove some 100-thousand American troops, and end our combat mission." 8. Obama shaking hands with all three and leaving podium, walking inside STORYLINE: President Barack Obama appointed Army General Martin Dempsey as his new Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman on Monday, amid a winding down of the war in Iraq, protracted battle in Afghanistan and American assistance to the NATO-led effort against Libya's Moammar Gadhafi. Obama announced a new line-up of his top military leadership group in the Rose Garden of the White House. The Memorial Day announcements had been expected, although there was no immediate indication what the military leadership moves might imply for possible changes in military policy. Already, the president had turned earlier this month to CIA Director Leon Panetta to succeed Robert Gates and Secretary of Defence and chose to move Army General David Petraeus from his command of the Afghanistan war effort to replace Panetta at the CIA. Marine General James Cartwright had long been rumoured to be Obama's favourite, and the president singled him out for praise at the announcement. But he turned instead to Dempsey, an accomplished veteran of the Iraq war, to succeed Admiral Mike Mullen as his top military adviser, calling the Army officer "one of our nation's most respected and combat-tested generals." The nominees have to be approved by the Senate, and Obama voiced hope that could happen in a timely fashion.
