Kidney Disease and Steroids: Corticosteroids, Prednisone Avoid Side Effects CKD and Steroids are trending topics right now in the kidney disease community. In our last video, we talked about how to protect the kidneys from damage from anabolic steroids. In this installment, we are going over corticosteroids and their interactions with chronic kidney disease. These type of steroids differ from anabolic steroids as they are prescribed medically and not for muscle growth or increased athletic performance. Corticosteroids are a type of anti-inflammatory drug. They are commonly used to treat rheumatologic diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels). Some examples of corticosteroids are cortisone and prednisone. So how do these steroids affect the kidneys? Corticosteroids are used in the treatment of Kidney diseases treated like lupus nephritis, systemic vasculitis, and other forms of glomerulonephritis. Side effects of corticosteroids include High blood pressure, depression, insomnia, weight gain, nausea or vomiting. Other things to look out for are drug interactions with Cyclosporine. Corticosteroids raises the risk of cyclosporine toxicities by raising drug levels in the body: kidney dysfunction, gall bladder disease, tingling sensations, high blood pressure, edema, fluid/electrolyte disturbances, and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) may all occur. We are here to talk about ways to offset some of these side effects, as this type of steroid can deplete a lot of nutrients. If you are going to take prednisone for a month ago, you may want to supplement Vitamin D and Calcium. Another thing that may happen is you may have trouble sleeping. Try taking melatonin to offset this issue. 3-10 mg a night are recommended. If you are waking up groggy, experiment with lower doses. Some other things are to lower sodium intake. This will help your kidney disease overall and help you feel generally better.
