In 1979, members of the Black Liberation Army posed as visitors, took two guards hostage, and drove Assata Shakur out of New Jersey’s Clinton Correctional Facility in a prison van. The longtime Black Panther Party member — and godmother of Tupac Shakur — went underground for several years before resurfacing in Cuba in 1984, where Fidel Castro granted her political asylum. In 2013, she became the first woman ever placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list, with a $2 million bounty on her capture. She lived in exile for more than four decades, teaching, writing, and speaking publicly, until her death in Havana on September 25, 2025, at age 78. This video breaks down how her escape humiliated U.S. law enforcement, the controversial trial that led to her conviction, and the revolutionary legacy she carried into hip-hop, activism, and global liberation movements. If you’re into deep dives, hidden history, or stories that challenge official narratives, watch through the end, leave your thoughts in the comments, and share with someone who needs to hear it. #blackhistory #civilrightsactivist #civilrightsmovement Contact for inquiries, questions and comments: [email protected] © 2025 African American Icons YT
