Whole slide image storage is a still a technological challenge, because of the size of those images. But why are whole slide images so big? It is due to the way a digital pathology image is created - it consists of not just one, but several different images combined into one file to give the user a dynamic, zoomable, virtual microscope experience. This is referred to as whole slide image magnification pyramid. The solution to storage of those huge files is a tiered cloud storage approach. The solution used for medical image cloud storage needs to be regulatory compliant, so when you are planning your work look for regulatory (e.g. hipaa) compliant cloud). The tiered approach consists of high availability cloud storage, where images reside for a short period of time and low availability (cold) cloud storage, where the images are moved to after the initial storage period.
