The Soviet Union built one of the most ambitious industrial projects of the 20th century. It began as a partnership with Fiat, grew into AvtoVAZ, and produced the Lada — a machine designed to motorize a superpower. For a moment, it worked. The Lada became the USSR’s most successful export, a source of hard currency, and a symbol of a country determined to prove it could match the industrial West. But behind the production lines was a system that could not innovate fast enough to survive the demands of a modern economy. As global automotive technology advanced, the USSR remained locked inside a rigid command structure, unable to upgrade its factories, its tooling, or its engineering philosophy. The car that once represented progress slowly turned into a liability. By the early 1980s, the Lada could no longer compete abroad. Export revenues collapsed, hard-currency shortages deepened, and AvtoVAZ became a case study in how a superpower’s industrial core can decay from within. What began as a triumph of Soviet planning became one of the clearest demonstrations of its limits. This is the story of the machine that motorized a nation — and the system that could no longer sustain it. #Lada #SovietUnion #USSRHistory #AvtoVAZ #Fiat124 #ColdWarHistory #IndustrialHistory #AutomotiveHistory #SovietCars #HistoryDocumentary
