(14 Dec 1995) Natural Sound The heads of seven nations have arrived in Bangkok for an Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit. The leaders are expected to stress their support for more free trade within the group, aiming for a total free trade zone by 2010. But there are doubts the Indonesians will give their full support to a free trade zone because of fears their farmers will lose out. The ASEAN summit got underway here in Bangkok Thursday and will go on until Friday. Among the seven members attending the summit are President Fidel Ramos of the Philippines and Thailand's Prime Minister, Banharn Silapa-archa. The leaders of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Vietnam are also here. They were all greeted by Mr Banharn at Thailand's Government House. Among them, Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet of Vietnam and Goh Chok Tong, Singapore's Prime Minister. They will concentrate on the important issue of free trade in their region and are expected to show strong support for more free trade within the group and a total free trade zone by 2010. But there have been doubts as to whether the Indonesians will give full support to a free trade zone because of fears their farmers will lose out. President Suharto of Indonesia inspected a guard of honour on his arrival in Bangkok for the summit. Next to come was Dr Mahathir Mohammad, the Malaysian Prime Minister. After the formalities, the leaders gathered for an informal dinner at the Normandie Grill in Bangkok's Oriental Hotel. On Friday the seven nations will be joined by the leaders of Cambodia, Burma and Laos for the signing of a non-nuclear zone treaty.
