Mid of car, officials outside STORYLINE France's President Jacques Chirac started an Asian tour in Thailand on Friday, on the first visit by a French leader since the two countries established diplomatic relations 150 years ago. French flags and giant portraits of Chirac and his wife, Bernadette, festooned major roads in Bangkok to greet the delegation, which includes business leaders and the ministers of foreign affairs, defence, economy, tourism and commerce. Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit personally welcomed the Chiracs at the airport. Royal aides shading the men with parasols as they walked a red carpet and inspected a guard of honour. Chirac received a key to the city of Bangkok ahead of a state dinner at the royal palace set for Friday evening. On Saturday, Chirac is due to hold talks with Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, pay homage to victims of the 2004 tsunami and announce a push for increased French investment in Thailand. About 30 French executives were accompanying Chirac, including top officials of oil giant Total SA, heavy engineering company Alstom SA, defence contractor Dassault Aviation SA, the world's largest cement maker, Lafarge SA, and Carrefour SA, the world's second-largest retailer. French companies are keen to win bids for a huge 37 (b) billion euro (44 billion (b) US dollar) public works overhaul in Thailand, with contracts going out to water, defence, technology and construction firms. The candidacy of Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai for UN Secretary-General will also be discussed during Chirac's visit. The permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain - are currently divided on when to choose the next secretary-general and where he or she should come from. Chirac's two-day trip to Thailand will be followed with a trip to India.
