Christina Conte, RDN, LDN, nutritionist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, explains the link between food additives and cancer risk. Certain additives, such as nitrates and nitrites found in processed meats like bacon, sausage, and hot dogs, have been linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Christina highlights how reducing ultra-processed foods and focusing on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help lower cancer risk. My name is Christina Conte and I'm the nutrition coordinator with the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies and Healthy Living at Dana-Farber. Today's question is: do food additives cause cancer? Food additives can be found in processed foods and are used to improve their texture, taste, or shelf life. The only food additives that have been associated with an increased risk of cancer are nitrates and nitrates, which are used to preserve processed meats such as bacon, sausage, and hot dogs. Consumption of processed meats is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Research shows that a diet rich in ultra processed foods, which can be high in fat, sugar, and salt, may increase the risk of certain chronic diseases such as cancer. Rather than avoiding all ultra processed foods which may contain food additives. Look to limit their frequency or choose those lower in fat, sugar, and salt. Try to focus on what you can add into your diet to support your health, rather than what to take out. Aim for a balanced eating plan that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.
