Bats out of hell, B24 Liberators skimmed tree-tops on their perilous journey into gunfire, barrage cables, ack ack, smoke, explosions to bomb one of the most heavily defended Nazi targets. Then fight through Messerschmidt 109s for home. One of the worldβs leading historians of the low-level Ploesti mission, Peter A. Frizzell, moderates the symposium at the 1997 2nd Air Division Reunion in Irvine, California about that raid on the oil refineries of Ploesti, Romania on August 1, 1943. B24 Liberator bomber pilots, gunners, a radio operator, and a bombardier, and a Romanian boy who was there share their memories of the battle and what led up to it. The 389th, 44th and 93rd groups are all with the 2nd Air Division 8th USAAF. Llewellyn Brown, Jr. Pilot 93rd BG Richard D. Butler Pilot 44th BG William R. Cameron Pilot 44th BG James A. Our father, Joseph G. Dzenowagis, was a navigator in the 467th Bomb Group; our mother, Helen R. Dzenowagis, was a Lansing State Journal writer; daughter, Joan, is a writer; and son, Joe, is a producer and videographer. We had a lot of help from our siblings: Anastasia, Victor and Tekla; and friends David and Jean Hastings of Norwich, Bill Kubota, John Gulas and many others. Our family is committed to tell the story of the 2nd Air Division in World War II as well as its enduring friendship with the English people since the war. We are currently digitizing some 1,000 interviews of veterans, family members and English friends, as well hundreds of hours of archival video, to preserve for future generations. We share them with the American Library Memorial to the 2nd Air Division, the resting place for the Roll of Honor inscribed with the names of 6,700 men and women of the 2nd Air Division who gave their lives. The 2nd Air Division raised funds at the end of the war in 1945 and in the years since to create a "living" memorial. The American Library is a place to not only remember those lost but to also build upon the cultural ties between the people of America and the United Kingdom. The Library, in the Forum in the City of Norwich, England, has books, events, lectures and extensive research archives. It is an important resource for information about a family member who served, about the war and about American culture. We encourage you to become involved, to find out more about how you can connect, research, volunteer or contribute to the American Library 2nd Air Division Memorial. https://www.americanlibrary.uk A great way to find out more about women in World War II and other wars is through The Donut Dollies Podcast.
