The impressive dam in Kakavia created Lake Plastiras. A Greek general, later prime minister, Nicholas Plastiras, had the idea in 1928. Years later, the dam and the lake became a reality and he became its ‘godfather’. Although modesty never permitted him to say so, the lake was his gift to future generations; blue water, beaches and fir trees, with people enjoying the landscape in every possible way. It’s a sight for sore eyes! The lake is framed by the fir tree peaks of the Agrafa Mountains, one of the most beautiful. The road around the lake’s perimeter is a montage of beautiful images. Along the route (70km long), you’ll enjoy all the most important sights of the area. A good idea is to divide the lake into sections of interest and see it in two or three days. Activities around the lake: canoeing, horseback riding, water bicycling, biking, skiing, fishing, hiking, paragliding & sailplaning. The villages of the lake: Kalyvia, Neraida, Neochori Monasteries: Panagia Pelekiti is one of the most impressive attractions in the area, while Petras Monastery and Korona (‘Crown’) Monastery will remind you of a castle and will thrill you! Local cuisine: Enjoy grilled and stewed meat, trout cooked over charcoal and other traditional dishes. Everything here is fresh & tasty. All these flavors will become unforgettable! The stone tavernas at Kalyvia Pezoulas, Belokomitis and Neohori, in the region of Tsardaki, are famous for their good food and hospitable atmosphere. Bon Apetit & Cheers! Accommodation: Romantic hideaways and villas or rooms to rent fully equipped to accommodate families and groups of friends. Prices from 35 Euros during summer & 50 Euros on winter. Enjoy your holidays in the villages of Kalyvia Pezoulas, Kastania, Kryoneri, Lambero, Belokomitis and especially Neochori. Lake Plastiras, also known as "Little Switzerland", is surrounded by an idyllic landscape of incomparable natural beauty that captivates the mind at first sight. Dreamlike in all aspects, it is one of the largest artificial lakes in Greece created in a location where in antiquity we could find the confluence of the rivers Tavropos and Achelous. It is a natural wonder that owes its existence to the inspired vision of General Nikolaos Plastiras (rightfully named after him) to create an impressive dam that would reinvigorate the entire region. Lake Plastira located in the wider area of Agrafa, lives every season at its fullest, promising to offer you the holiday you dreamed of. The grandeur of the lake is crowned with the surrounding alpine peaks; snowcapped or green, with rushing streams that flirt with lacy coves, narrow inlets of water between cliffs that create fjord-like scenes and a single luscious green islet in the middle create a mind-blowing landscape which is mirrored in the emerald waters of the lake. In the vicinity you can find a handful of charming villages situated along the lakeshore or on the mountainous slopes which offer you an idyllic view of the lake! A great place for excursion in Greece. Magic nature and sports activities! Do not miss it #exoticgreece #greekislands #holidaysingreece
