I found an old family album with some amazing photos of my grandmother as a young woman (1912 to 1916). Most were taken in Seaside Oregon, on the North Oregon Coast, which was a very popular place to be at the turn of the century. To escape Portland’s summer heat, families would make the journey from Portland to play in the cool Pacific Ocean and relax on Seaside’s temperate beach. In 1888, Portlanders could take a boat from Portland down the Columbia River and then catch a train from Young’s Bay (Astoria) and journey 15 miles south to Seaside. In 1898, the railroad system evolved and Portlander's could take a train from Portland to Astoria along the South bank of the Columbia River, and then switch to the train to Seaside. Finally in 1915 an unpaved road was opened and you could now drive from Portland all the way to Seaside, although the journey was not without peril. But many found their way too Seaside. In the summertime, many families would stay at the coast, with husbands journeying down for the weekend. Seaside and all of the North Oregon Coast remain today as popular tourist destinations.
