Eric Coates (1886-1957) was a British composer and viola player most well-known for composing light music and The Dambusters March. He wrote Ballad in 1906 and it exists in two versions: the original viola version, written while he was studying viola with Lionel Tertis at the Royal Academy of Music, and an alternative version for cello. The piece is dedicated to Fred Hodgkinson, a cellist and friend of the composer, who, with his infectious enthusiasm, had persuaded Coates’s father to allow his son to study both viola and composition in London. This performance was recorded during lockdown isolation for VE Day, 8th May 2021. Viola – Peter Mallinson Piano – Lynn Arnold
