In this interview Dr Edwige Moyroud blends curiosity, evolution, plant-environment interactions, flower development and synthetic biology. 00:00 Patterning petals 00:42 Sowing the seed of a career 01:25 From pipettes to people 02:05 Advice for budding plant scientists 02:42 Alien plants 03:08 What's next for plant science research Speaker Profile: Edwige is a molecular and cell biologist by training (Bsc & MSc at ENS Lyon, France) investigating plant development and evolution. During her PhD (Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble and ENS Lyon, France) she studied a central regulator of flower development, linked with the emergence of flowering plants. Edwige then joined the Department of Plant Sciences in Cambridge (UK) as a post-doctoral fellow to understand how plants can produce iridescence before starting her group at the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU) to investigate the formation and evolution of patterns on petals. Edwige lectures in the Department of Genetics, and is the Nicolli Fellow in Natural Sciences at Queens’ College at the University of Cambridge. In parallel, she also leads several outreach initiatives to make science more inclusive and accessible to a wider society. The work of Edwige, along with her group and collaborators, was recognised through the Bicentenary Medal of the Linnean Society (2018), a Plant Journal Fellowship for new investigator (2020) and a Rising Star in Plant Sciences award (2023).
