What do industry leaders think with regard to innovation, unmet needs, and approaches to those unmet needs? Treatment for patients with geographic atrophy is an important need. Also prevention is a goal. Currently treatment is possible with anti-VEGF agents, but AI algorithms and novel targets may lead to a prevention strategy. Another desire is to develop devices that can deliver stem cells or other developing technologies. Enhanced visualization is on a surgeon’s wish list, and more seamless integration within the operating room, and between the O.R. and the clinic. Robotics is expected to become useful as well. It will be important for new technologies to not only maintain efficacy levels of current treatments, but also to be integrated into practices in a cost effective way. Instrumentation may become less expensive for doctors as companies create revenue flow on analytics and data created by new technologies. In defining unmet need in instrumentation, engineers need collaboration with physicians to understand what is really needed and to get new ideas. Collaborations between companies can also be useful. Collaborations outside the United States can provide new ideas, and access to underserved patient populations with unmet need. The panel takes places at OIS@ASRS at the Ritz Carlton in Chicago on July 25, 2019.
