In the age of tweets, sound bites, and 2-minute pop songs, you would be forgiven for believing that ideas can uniformly be distilled into tiny, shot glass-sized containers. This is not so, according to conductor and arts advocate Jordan Randall Smith, who draws on examples from the tech industry, craftsmanship, and gourmet victuals as he dissects the elements of musical composition and performance. Smith believes that it is time to slow down our thinking and again embrace big ideas that take "boring timescales" to create, and focused patience to consume. Jordan Randall Smith is the founder and Music Director of Baltimore chamber orchestra Symphony Number One, which performs substantial works by emerging composers, classical masterworks, with “a twist of pop”. Lauded for innovative programming by the Baltimore Sun and Fanfare Magazine, the group performs in a variety of venues and formats across the Mid-Atlantic region, and has released four commercial albums to critical acclaim. Smith is also conductor of the Hopkins Concert Orchestra at Johns Hopkins University and Music Director at Hunt’s Church in Towson, Maryland.
