Let’s talk Courage: an interactive session with Deepa Malik An inspiring interactive session titled “Let’s Talk Courage” was organised for school students under the aegis of The Wise Owl, a platform promoting literature and art, in collaboration with Chandigarh Citizens Foundation (CCF). The highlight of the event was an engaging conversation with Deepa Malik, India’s celebrated Paralympic silver medallist. The session was moderated by Dr Harmeet Singh, Co-Founder of The Wise Owl. The programme began with a screening of a short film tracing Deepa’s remarkable journey — from being paralysed chest down due to a spinal tumour to becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Rio Paralympics in 2016. An athlete, activist and changemaker with 68 national medals, 23 international medals and three Asian records, Deepa spoke candidly about resilience, courage and the true meaning of education. Urging students to “find a solution, not dwell on the problem,” she described herself as “wheelchair-liberated” rather than wheelchair-bound. Students from DPS Chandigarh, DPS Mohali, Bhavan Vidyalaya Chandigarh and PM Shri GGMSSS, Sector 18 attended with their teachers and enthusiastically engaged with her on motivation, goals and overcoming odds. The session was also attended by Kavita Das, former Principal St John’s High School, Chief Excecutive GD Goenka School, Mohali & Convener of Education Focus Group, CCF, Lt Col Ratanbir Singh, former Principal St Kabir, among others. Students received participation certificates autographed by Deepa, who also signed copies of her book Bring It On, mapping her inspiring journey.
