What does it really mean to become a physician? Is it a degree, a white coat, or something far more meaningful? In this deeply personal talk, one doctor traces her medical calling back to 1870s England, where her great-grandmother worked as a scullery maid before becoming a midwife. Through two world wars, the influenza pandemic, thyroid storms treated with early surgical techniques, and an unexpected Ukrainian American love story, medicine became more than a profession—it became a family inheritance shaped by resilience, sacrifice, and service. From house calls in London and Surrey to modern family practice in America, this story spans generations and continents. Yet the lesson remains strikingly simple and urgently relevant for today’s youth: The foundation of medicine is not technology, prestige, or achievement. It is listening. Because every person matters. Dr. Duke is a recently retired board certified family medicine doctor. She has practiced medicine at Providence St. Jude Medical Group for 20 years and prior to that 17 years at UCI, St Joseph’s in Orange and Harriman Jones Medical Group. Helping patients find wellness has been her primary focus. Additionally, she teaches and has been a mentor to physician colleagues, medical students, residents, nurses, medical assistants and high school students. Because of her passion for women’s health, she volunteers at St Jude’s Neighborhood clinic providing preventive care. When she is not in the office or the hospital, you’ll find her baking sweet treats or traveling. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
