When I was offered 40 reclaimed shipping containers, it felt like a dream opportunity. They were being “donated.” The school even told me they were willing to pay someone to remove them. But what I didn’t understand at the time was this: Removing 40 shipping containers is not a favor. It’s labor. It’s liability. It’s logistics. It’s law. It’s power. In this video, I reflect on what I would do differently if I were starting this project again: • Contracts and written agreements • Legal liability and insurance • Protective gear and demolition safety • Scrap metal value and negotiation • Racism, power dynamics, and access • When “donation” is actually unpaid labor • How thousands of human hours can disappear without safeguards This was the early stage of my shipping container project connected to The Universal Fairytale — a space-making initiative for migrants, refugees, and cultural exchange. If you are: – Working with donated materials – Building with shipping containers – Organizing community labor – Navigating power imbalances – Or dreaming big without institutional backing 00:00 The Offer: 40 Shipping Containers 01:32 Why It Felt Like a Dream Opportunity 03:10 What “Gifted” Really Means 05:02 The Cost of Removal & Hidden Labor 07:18 No Contract, No Protection 09:45 Legal Liability & Insurance Realities 12:14 Demolition Safety & Protective Gear 14:36 Scrap Metal Value & Negotiation Mistakes 17:05 Power, Race & Institutional Dynamics 20:12 Thousands of Human Hours 22:40 What I Would Do Differently 25:03 Advice If You’re Offered “Donated” Materials 27:30 Where This Project Goes Next This video is for you. I record daily, reflecting honestly — without smoothing over the difficult parts. — Chandra Brooks
