Olivine Group Old name – Chrysolite Silicate Structure – Nesosilicate Crystal System – Orthorhombic crystal system General formula – X2SiO4 X - Fe, Mg Linked with divalent (+2) atoms in 6- fold coordination. Texture A common and distinctive texture is known as spinifex texture and consists of long acicular phenocrysts of olivine (or pseudomorphs of alteration minerals after olivine) or pyroxene which give the rock a bladed appearance especially on a weathered surface. Komatite rocks Shows Spinifex Texture. Higher pressure Olivine adopt the denser structure of spinel. Forsterite transform to β Spinel at ~ 140kbar and 1000°c temp. Melting Point of Forsterite is 1890° Mg rich olivine is an essential mineral ion most ultrabasic rocks (Peridotite, picrate, Dunite), In basic igneous rocks too (Basalt, gabbro, norite, dolerite) In igneous rocks it shows reaction rim (kelyphytic rims or corona structure) against plagioclase crystals. Olivine readily alters to serpentine minerals and will sometimes develop coronas of pyroxene and amphibole.
