From Limited to Expert User: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding IELTS Band Progression as a Pedagogical Roadmap As a non-native English teacher, I have often observed that many students, and even fellow teachers struggle to interpret what IELTS band scores actually mean in terms of language development. Too often, IELTS bands are seen merely as test results, not as indicators of how English proficiency grows step by step. In my recent academic work, I explore IELTS band progression (Band 4.5–9.0) as a developmental roadmap, aligned with CEFR descriptors and communicative competence theory. The focus is not only on grammar or vocabulary, but also on fluency, coherence, register awareness, and pragmatic use of language. One key insight from classroom experience and literature is that non-native learners face recurring challenges, such as: Limited lexical range First-language interference Difficulty maintaining fluency Uncertainty in using formal vs. informal English Understanding these challenges helps teachers design more realistic, targeted instruction—especially for learners aiming to move from intermediate to advanced levels. I hope this perspective contributes to more meaningful IELTS preparation and more informed English teaching practices. #IELTS #EnglishTeaching #AppliedLinguistics #NonNativeTeachers #CEFR #LanguageLearning #TESOL #AcademicWriting
