As much as we want to be happy we hate to be sad. In some ways, our pursuit of happiness could be seen as an attempt to simply escape sadness. We really want to be happy, sure; but, we mainly want to avoid sadness. This is why I think people who like sad movies are possibly insane. You're telling me that you're choosing to watch a movie that's going to make you cry? That's the type of movie my mom-mom like to watch, so we would call movies like that "mom-mom movies." She would always say "Well, that's real life. Things don't always go the way you want them to go." To which I respond: "If I wanted to experience real life, I wouldn't be watching a movie!" This avoidance of sadness or negativity is what makes Jesus' words in the beatitudes so interesting. You would think that, since he's talking about the kingdom, he'd be speaking of only light, happy things. Instead, he starts with apparently negative truths. Jesus is explaining the "backwards blessings" of the kingdom of God. He's establishing the character traits of people who will enter the kingdom of God. Last week, he spoke about spiritual bankruptcy. This being totally and utterly reliant on him for salvation. It is recognizing a need. This is the first step people must find themselves in on the road to salvation and entering the kingdom of God and results in faith in Christ. Now, today, he moves to the natural reaction to poorness: sadness. Let's look at Jesus's description of true blessedness.
