(15 May 1998) Japanese/English U-S President Bill Clinton met Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto for bilateral talks at the start of the three-day economic G-8 summit. Both leaders cited the recent riots in Indonesia, and nuclear testing in India, as their main concerns. Clinton also used the opportunity to pay tribute to American singer Frank Sinatra who died early on Friday. U-S President Bill Clinton and Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto held bilateral talks on Friday at the start of the G-8 economic summit. Both leaders later held a news conference and Hashimoto outlined his regional concerns. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese with English translation) "We have been extremely concerned about the second nuclear experiments by India and also the developing frustrations with Indonesia." SUPER CAPTION: Ryutaro Hashimoto, Japanese Prime Minister Hashimoto said U-S co-operation and leadership was vital in solving issues like the recent riots in Indonesia and this week's nuclear tests in India. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese with English translation) "Our co-operation is most critical in tackling those two issues that have been arising in the last few days......as leaders participating in the summit he (Clinton) is the big brother to me so I will be listening to the many advices of my big brothers so we can walk together on the big issues....although he doesn't look that old." SUPER CAPTION: Ryutaro Hashimoto, Japanese Prime Minister Rioting in Indonesia has been sparked by the country's latest economic crisis. But when Clinton was asked whether President Suharto should step down -- he said that was for Indonesia to decide. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It is a very large country and an important country, the loss of life and other destructive developments are heartbreaking.The question you ask is only one the Indonesian people will have to decide. What we do believe, the present government and the President must open a dialogue with all elements of society and that it lead to a genuine sense of political form and reconciliation as well as looking at the economic reforms." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, US President Clinton also echoed Hashimoto's concerns about India's five nuclear tests this week. The U-S President responded swiftly with economic sanctions in protest against the tests. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I will say again I have followed very closely the events in India since the tests. I have watched the news and listened very carefully to the statements by the Indian government representatives and the Prime Minister, and I believe that soon India will be the largest country in the world with population, they have the biggest middle class in the world. They are going to have a very big say in the 21st century and no less that other countries that emerging, China, a new democratic Russia which Prime Minister Hashimoto has done a lot of work for on the last several months. These countries will have to decide how they will define their greatness, and will they define it in 21st century terms, in terms of the achievements of their people and their ability to lead by example and cooperation or will they divide in the starkest terms in the 20th century including how many nuclear weapons they have." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, US President Clinton also used the opportunity to again ask India's rival, Pakistan, not to retaliate with its own tests. He also signalled the issue would be a hot topic at the G-8.
