The two first ladies, Samantha Cameron and Michelle Obama, played hostesses to the event, serving side dishes onto guests' plates. "Would you like a burger?" Cameron was heard to ask the wife of a US marine. British sausages, Kentish rosemary lamb chops and Jersey Royal potatoes were also on the menu, along side American staples such as hamburgers, corn on the cob and coleslaw. Around 150 active-duty troops from the US and Britain along with some spouses attended the event in the sunny garden behind 10 Downing Street, underscoring a partnership just announced between the two countries to share resources to help service members and their families. The agreement comes as NATO stepped up its military and diplomatic pressure on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's regime this week in an effort to jolt the stalemated operation. Obama is also expected to announce the first phase of the withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan within weeks, and British military officials have said they will support whatever decision Obama makes. Britain has 10-thousand troops in Afghanistan, second only to the 100-thousand US forces there. Later in the day Obama held a joint news conference with Cameron and will then give a centrepiece address to both houses of the British Parliament.
