Mono printing with chalk markers on a stretched canvas. (primed with black acrylic paint) This demo is another mark making exploration that makes use of the same canvas used in the previous video that demonstrated expressive mark making with a large brush. BIG BRUSH, 1 COLOUR • BIG BRUSH, 1 COLOUR TIME STAMPS (skip through the video at selected points) 0:00 Prepare the canvas. Using black acrylic paint I begin to paint over the marks made from the previous demo. 1:16 Masking tape. I use decorators tape which has a firm but not too strong glue strength, I place random lines of tape and almost try to create a balanced composition. You could use torn pieces of newspaper taped down for larger areas. When I began this I wasn't sure how it would turn out. 2:38 Masking finished. Try to keep this simple to begin with and turn the canvas around to check the composition. You can also work things out on paper first and experiment with a few sketches. 2:43 Paint transfer sheet. I use recycled plastic bags for this. You want to use the very thin type of plastic as this will achieve a greater range of random marks and variety of texture. 3:00 Chalk markers. I am using the White jumbo tip from the CHALKOLA range. These will dry very fast so it is important to work on small sections each time. Work with even strokes and allow plenty of the chalk paint to flow onto the surface of the plastic sheet. 3:11 Applying the paint. Don't be too precise with this stage, you will achieve some interesting surface texture if you roughly lay the plastic transfer sheet down then quickly lift it before placing it on another section. When the paint is used simply repeat the process with the same transfer sheet. 5:39 Adding texture. Draw lines directly onto the transfer sheet, you could also try a series of dots or circles. Work fast because this will dry out quickly. 6:10 Apply this texture over the darker sections, limit this to just a few areas or it will have less impact. 7:02 Remove the masking tape. 7:57 The finished composition. Although you could continue to build the layers up with other colours, I decided that I liked the contrast between the hard edges and the areas of texture. I will continue with this composition in another video. Spray the artwork with a couple of coats of acrylic varnish to fix the chalk markers and prevent smudging.
