(28 Jan 1997) English/Nat The Pakistan Supreme Court is expected to decide whether to reinstate Benazir Bhutto as the country's prime minister on Wednesday. She was ousted by President Farooq Leghari over allegations of corruption in her administration last November. The seven-judge panel could cause Monday's elections to be postponed. However, as the verdict approaches, Bhutto has not slowed down her campaign to try and win back the trust of the Pakistani people. It's early morning in eastern Pakistan and Benazir Bhutto is out doing what she's learnt to do best: fighting for political life. She's proven herself to be the ultimate survivor. Just five short months ago, Benazir was thrown out of office for the second time amidst allegations of corruption on a scale huge by even Pakistani standards. Many commentators wrote her off, believing that she was beaten once and for all. But Benazir, who survived incarceration under martial law in the 1980s, has come back with all guns blazing. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I've always been used to fighting against the odds. I've always been the person who has reflected popular aspirations and I've always had the State apparatus tipped and tilted against my party. But I've always succeeded in fighting against the odds and I expect to succeed again." SUPER CAPTION: Benazir Bhutto, Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nevertheless, Benazir's troubles are far from over. Her husband Asif Ali Zardari, known as 'Mister 40 per cent', has been jailed on charges of corruption. So far, prosecutors have failed to build a case against him -- proof his critics say of the sheer efficiency of Zardari's illegal dealings and not his innocence. He's also charged with the murder of Benazir's eldest brother, Murtaza, who was gunned down in the southern port city of Karachi in September last year. His murder, the latest bloody chapter in the family's turbulent history, shook the dynasty to the very core, turning Bhutto against Bhutto. Murtaza's Lebanese widow, Ghinwa has accused Zardari of masterminding the shooting; what's more, she's formed her own party and is opposing Benazir. In villages across the Bhutto home State of Sind, she's gathering massive support as she stakes a claim to the family mantle. It's sparked a bitter rivalry between the two women. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I had offered this olive branch to Benazir right after the murder of Murtaza since she looked so grieved over it, I thought it was the time to start a new page and that that was the time, maybe, for her also to change her line of politics or to realise her mistakes." SUPER CAPTION: Ghinwa Bhutto, Benazir's sister-in-law Benazir's father, who founded the political dynasty, chose her as his heir rather than Murtaza. She's clearly angered by the challenge to her leadership. SOUNDBITE: (English) "A Lebanese whose own husband didn't give her a Pakistani passport. It's a joke." SUPER CAPTION: Benazir Bhutto, Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister But Benazir's camp is hardly smiling. There's little doubt that Ghinwa is eating into the Bhutto vote bank. Nevertheless, as the reigning queen of the family, Benazir still attracts huge crowds wherever she goes. In short, she's still able to cash in on her father's name despite the charge that she and her husband have systematically looted the country. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It would seem to me that there's something about Benazir Bhutto that pulls her up. This is like the Ghandis in India -- a family that attracts for some reason a lot of interest."
