Some pre social-distancing footage from a private lesson with Mark. Focusing on relaxed and playful chi sau, the techniques involved are not scripted or consciously applied - just sections of the open hand forms applied dynamically (this is not a simulated fight but more like 3 dimensional chess played using reflex). By trying to disrupt each other’s balance and structure without compromising our own (i.e. not bouncing off your opponent), you limit their ability to generate or absorb force which is immediately apparent. So unless we’re focusing on conditioning/sparring, it can almost feel gratuitous to deliver force when striking in this context. While Mark could easily strike through my structure at will using superior skill & relaxation, given this is “healthy conflict” designed to improve both parties (as opposed to a zero sum competition where he just overwhelms me), Mark is graciously stooping to my level. As you can see in the slow motion sections, every movement is both an attack and defense that either lands or gets successfully countered by the opponent. You may also notice a tendency for particular moves to repeat, this is not intentional but a natural by-product of each persons unique strengths & weaknesses i.e. my specific way of tensing/bracing will lead Mark to naturally exploit the same opening over and over (providing feedback for me to work on).
