“Skip to My Lou” is a sing dance game song. First published around 1840, the nursery rhyme and traditional folk song is represented as No. 3593 in the Roud Folk Song Index. According to poet/biographer Carl Sandburg, the dance associated with the song was a popular party game during U.S. President Abraham Lincoln’s youth in southern Indiana. The dancing game, as explained by John A. and Alan Lomax, is a game of stealing or swapping dance partners (as in square dancing). Couples skip around a circle, hand in hand, while a single young man in the center of the circle sings “Lost my partner, what’ll I do?” With the next verse, “I’ll get another as pretty as you,” he chooses a girl, then takes her hand while her original partner moves to the center of the circle. The word “lou” in the song’s title is derived from the Scottish word “loo,” meaning “love.” Through the years, “Skip to My Lou” has been recorded by numerous artists, including Pete Seeger, Judy Garland, and Nat King Cole, among others. The song has also been featured in various films, including “Meet Me in St. Louis,” “Across the Wide Missouri,” and “The Searchers,” plus others. As pianist Charles Manning improvises “Skip to My Lou,” sing and/or dance along to the popular folk song. For reference, several verses of the lyrics are printed below. ~ Lyrics ~ Skip, skip, skip to my Lou, Skip, skip, skip to my Lou, Skip, skip, skip to my Lou, Skip to my Lou, my darlin'.
