Once dubbed Top Gear's "Greatest Driving Road in the World", there was no way I was going to pass up an opportunity to ride this staggering ribbon of road as I made my way through Northern Italy on my adventure back home to the UK. Originally built in 1820-1825, the pass is the second highest in the Alps with the village at its peak sitting at over 9,000 feet (2,757m) above sea level I was quite fortunate that the road was reasonably quiet as I passed through on a Friday afternoon - minimal cars and bicycles affecting my enjoyment of the beautiful sights and multiple twists, turns and hairpins. However, I would not say that the famous bit of the pass that everybody thinks of (the section in the thumbnail) is the best bit as it's actually too narrow and the gradients around the hairpins make for really tricky slow speed manoeuvring. I actually preferred the part leading up to summit (coming from Bormio), which was much more flowing and the Scrambler. Did you enjoy this video? Hit the thumbs up button.
