Racist music box by Karrer, Teufenthal C.1890 with automaton figures playing multiple bells

This extremely rare Victorian music box by Karrer dates from around 1890. It has no less than fifteen bells, some of which are struck by three automata figures depicting racial stereotypes. Two are of Chinese character and in the centre, a rather anthropomorphic monkey wearing spectacles. The programme includes Strauss and Mercandante and was probably intended for a hidden bell box as these often have multiple bells under the movement. But here they all are on full show.
