30 June – 9 July 2023, Beijing. Several evenings in a row, lingering at the intersection of the North 4th Ring Road and the old Beijing–Zhangjiakou Railway—just watching, casually filming. A short stroll from Tsinghua's East Gate. Back in my university days, this area was still wasteland. I remember cycling to the old Qinghua Yuan Railway Station nearby on a trip to Gubeikou Great Wall. I had no idea this place would change so much. ——— A scene both dreamlike and sci-fi. Above: Subway Line 13 roaring past, carriages flashing in the dark. Below: North 4th Ring Road—endless traffic, engine hum, headlights streaking like the city's arteries. Between: the newly transformed Beijing–Zhangjiakou Railway Heritage Park. People singing, dancing, jogging, strolling, just sitting on benches, staring into space. Three speeds. Three sounds. Three layers, stacked. ——— This is the Beijing–Zhangjiakou Railway Heritage Park—a century-old line reborn. On June 29, 2023, Phase One opened: from Qinghua East Road north to the North 4th Ring Road, 1.2 kilometers. Once a railway barrier, now a city "stitch." Eleven gray pillars beneath the viaduct have become a "history gallery," painted with "Suzhou numerals" marking every station from Xizhimen to Badaling—counting symbols introduced by Jeme Tien‑yow. The design team's goal: to make history "visible culture." Twelve themed gardens: Crossing Memory Garden, Jeme Tien‑yow Memorial Garden, Wilderness Memory Garden—strung together like a necklace by a single track. The old railway bridge over the 4th Ring Road is now a steel廊, with a row of benches on the west side—the "Sunset Living Room." At dusk, people sit, feet dangling over traffic, watching the sunset fade behind the Western Hills. ——— Nearby: Qinghua Yuan Railway Station. Built in 1910, designed by Jeme Tien‑yow. In 1960, to make way for Tsinghua's expansion, the tracks shifted 800 meters east; the old station became a freight depot. In 2016, with the new high‑speed line, it closed. Renovated and reopened in 2023. Its plaque—"Qinghua Yuan Station" in Jeme's own calligraphy—is the only original station sign from the Beijing–Zhangjiakou line still intact. That station I cycled to as a student—now part of the heritage park. ——— I came here several evenings in a row. Sat in the "Sunset Living Room," watching the sky darken, watching subway trains pass one after another, watching people dance in circles below. Families with children came to see the trains. Couples leaned against railings for selfies. Elderly in wheelchairs were pushed slowly along. Line 13 roared past, loud—but strangely, it wasn't noise. All those sounds layered together became the soundtrack of these summer evenings. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city? With its old and new—century‑old railway sleepers, silver subway cars. With its up and down—trains above roaring past, people below singing and dancing. With what changes and what stays—wasteland in memory, now the "Sunset Living Room."
