This is "Mindblender," a 1993 motion simulator ride produced by Palomar Pictures for Peter Gabriel, and captured from a Sony HDD-1000 HDTV master-quality tape. "Mindblender" was dubbed the first (and, perhaps, only) "rock'n roll ride." Blending ex-Genesis-member Peter Gabriel's song "Kiss The Frog" with advanced & mesmerizing 3D visuals, the video itself was an sight to behold; however, for a short period, the video was shown on a world-wide tour between various amusement parks, paired with Iwerks Entertainment's Reactor motion simulators to provide a matching physical roller coaster-like experience through the "Mindblender" world. Directed by Brett Leonard (The Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity) and sponsored by Crystal Pepsi, the ride was heavily hyped, received a large amount of positive press coverage, and even won a 1994 MTV Video Music Award for "Best Special Effects in a Video." The Sony HDD-1000 was the world's first commercially available digital HDTV recording format and was also the world's first uncompressed digital HDTV recording device. First demonstrated in 1987, the HDD-1000 was an incredible feat of engineering capable of data storage and processing deemed unrealistic to achieve in a mass-produced piece of hardware one year earlier. Storing uncompressed 1920x1035 interlaced video with 8 channels of uncompressed 48kHz DASH PCM digital audio, the HDD-1000 was capable of recording data at an incredible 1.2 Gbps onto a 11.75"-diameter (63 minute), 1"-wide metal tape for a total capacity of over 4.5 Tb per tape! This recorder was also the first HDTV recorder capable of editing digitally for completely lossless results. It is believed that once the tour of the ride was completed in the mid-1990's, "Mindblender" was never again shown in it's entirety in HD quality. So please enjoy this very special upload of very fun footage! Fun fact: The CG graphics were developed & rendered by Angel Studios, Inc which, by 1995, largely shifted to video game development. In 2002, it was bought out by Take Two Interactive and was renamed "Rockstar San Diego, Inc." Since then, they have worked on the Midnight Club, Red Dead, and Grand Theft Auto series of video games. ________________________________________________ This was recorded off on a Sony HDD-1000 1" HDTV open reel VTR.
