Ishq e Dem Jahon is a Wakhi song written by the much-loved Wakhi poet Nazir Ahmed Bulbul, who currently resides in the district of Gojal, Hunza. It is a popular song in the region and the first choice amongst the children at Nasir Khusrow Academy Ghulkin (the local primary school in Ghulkiin), who immediately expressed their desire to perform it for this collaboration. The idea for this project was born as a part of my extensive resident management program with Mountain Story Hunza, a hotel-resort committed to working towards building a cross cultural relationship within diverse regions of our country, through an exchange of expertise by professionals and artists. An objective of this program and henceforth this project is to teach, collaborate with and empower children and young adults of remote areas. A few days of rehearsals at the Nasir Khusrow Academy was followed by the audio recording at the Mountain story outpost in Ghulkin which is a sustainable development project in partnership with USAID. Students were gathered to perform and record the final song at the outpost. The music video was shot during rehearsals at the school and on a field trip to a fish farm in another neighboring village called Gircha. Instruments featured in this recording include the Rubab - a highly ranked traditional string instrument and widely played by young musicians in the region; Tombak - an Iranian percussion instrument also very popular amongst the musicians in Hunza; Ukulele - a Hawaiian string instrument; and a quire of vocalists, both girls and boys amongst which are three lead singers. The song is entirely performed by the very talented children of Nasir Khusrow academy in Ghulkin with whom I had the joy to create this song with. Ishq e Dem Jahon was recorded using a portable audio recording device (Zoom HS4) and the video was shot on a phone camera with the help of the local community and students. I had the fortune of getting all the footage edited by a dear friend, our national hero and celebrated cyclist Kamran Ali (@kamaranonbike) and the audio mastered by another dear friend, renowned singer/songwriter/producer Haniya Aslam. The intention behind this project is to highlight the young talent of the region and provide them some exposure through the collaboration; to celebrate the Wakhi language, its poetry, its people and culture. Importantly bringing to light how vulnerable the language Wakhi now is, as only up to 40,000 native speakers of this language remain in the world. I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone who became a part of this project especially Atif Khan, Asma Haider at Mountain Story and Raania Durrani for developing this resident manager exchange program; to my editor Kamran Ali who has only heart for community based projects like these; Haniya Aslam for mastering this live recording take; Atif Ali and Azhar Uddin for their continuous field support; Principal Aman Hussain and his teachers at Nasir Khusrow Academy for their commitment to the school and its children. Most importantly the lovely and talented students who were an absolute pleasure to work with and be around. Hope you guys enjoy our collaboration.
