Muskmelon is greatly cultivated as a dry & warm season crop, but if specific conditions are met, it can also be grown althrough the year. The crop usually grows well on temperatures between 25°C and 35°C, while the seed requires temperatures between 25°C and 30°C for better germination. Th seeds show poor germination if the temperartures drastically fall below 18°C. High temperature and low humidity at fruit ripening stage enhances the sweetness ,aroma and higher percentage of the marketable fruits. Muskmelon exhibits drought tolerance but highly susceptible to frost. Continuous rain and high humidity will also pose a major threat as it results in onset of foliar diseases, reduced flowering and fruit set. Muskmelon thrives well on sandy and sandy loam soils provided with good fertility and drainage. Lighter soils which warm up quickly exhibit higher early yields, while in heavier soils, the vine growth and fruit maturity gets slightly delayed. Muskmelon is highly sensitive to acidic and alkaline soils. Hence, an ideal soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is highly recommended.
