Moon Salutes are one of my favorite to teach, and my regular yogis have grown to love it. I typically teach it live or virtually every full moon. The sequence is designed to follow the waxing and waning of the moon with expansion in standing side bend at either end and a deep yogi squat in the center. There are a few variations of this salutation, occasionally including Warrior 1 and 2 integrated into the stretch sequence of asana. The Moon Salutes focus on the lower extremities, stretching the legs deeply. This practice flows from one side of the mat to the other, and takes the postures in reverse sequence after going through the center. Have two blocks with one at each end as you travel the mat right to left. The Moon Salute was filmed on my family's farm in Augusta, MO. We had wanted to capture the moon in the sky to create this practice, but the timing so often would elude us. My older brother shared, that if we woke up early, we could capture it in the 5 AM hour. You will notice the full moon over my left shoulder and the light changing as sun was rising as we filmed. Filming in nature makes you present to the moment and all the elements around, and the variables that are beyond our control - life! Special thank you to Karl, KFM Designs for the videography and photography slide show at the end of the practice. America is a beautiful nation, and may these photos at the end teleport you to a little piece of this vast and beautiful nation.
