Monday′s summit between President Park Geun-hye and Joachim Gauck marks the first time a German president visited Northeast Asia. According to our Hwang Sung-hee, the two leaders discussed a range of issues from reunification to boosting economic cooperation. Promoting Germany′s vision for a peaceful Korean Peninsula was one of the key agenda items on Germany′s President Joachim Gauck′s state visit here. ″I expressed my gratitude to President Gauck, who has given unfailing support on a peaceful reunification of Korean peninsula. We decided to step up our collaboration on the issue of reunification.″ At a joint press conference with President Park following their summit, the visiting German leader clarified that Volkswagen′s diesel emissions scandal was not discussed. Sales of Volkswagen vehicles in Korea plunged nearly 10 percent in September from a month earlier... after the German automaker admitted rigging U.S. emissions tests. Despite the dismal figures, Gauck said the reputation of German brands in Seoul appears unharmed. ″I don′t think there′s a big change to the reputation of German products in South Korea and I appreciate that.″ Another key agenda item was reaffirming bilateral business ties. For one, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute and German automaker BMW signed a Memorandum of Understanding for increased cooperation in converging automotive technology with information technology. The leaders agreed to expand trade and investment in a balanced manner. Germany is Korea′s largest trade partner in Europe, but Seoul′s trade deficit with the nation tripled in seven years. ″President Gauck will wrap up his four-day visit with a trip to the Demilitarized Zone, where he is expected to discuss German reunification. Hwang Sung-hee, Arirang News.″
