Welcome to my weekly series dropping every #chewsday: WTF IS THAT?!? FROM THE PAST where I try an over 100 year old recipe. BLACK AND WHITE CAKE 2 squares unsweetened chocolate ( about 1/4 cup) 1/2 cup sugar 1 egg ½ cup sugar ¼ cup sour milk ½ cup sweet milk 1⅞ cups flour 1 egg yolk ½ teaspoon soda ¼ cup butter or margarine ½ teaspoon vanilla Melt chocolate over hot water, add one-half cup of sugar, and sweet milk gradually, then add yolk of egg, and cook until mixture thickens. Set aside to cool. Cream the butter, add gradually one-half cup sugar, egg well beaten, sour milk, and flour mixed and sifted with soda. Combine mixtures and add vanilla. Bake in shallow cake pans in a moderate oven. Put boiled frosting between and on top. Time in oven, 30 minutes. Temperature, 350°. *The Modern Priscilla was an American magazine that ran from 1887 to 1930. In the Modern Priscilla Cook Book, published in 1924, every one of its one thousand recipes was tested. #vintage #retrorecipes #oldrecipe #cake #cakerecipe
